The Award ceremony is held in New Delhi and is presented by the President of India.

The National Film Development Corporation is the body responsible for the presentation of the National Film Awards. Its awards are primarily divided into two categories: Featured Film Awards and Non-Featured Film Awards. Further, it is categorised into three sections: Feature Films, Non-Feature Films and Best Writing on Cinema.

The best personalities are awarded with medallions, cash, and a certificate of merit.

The National Film Awards recognise not only mainstream commercial films but also encourage independent and art-house cinema. The aim of the awards is to honour excellence in various categories, including acting, directing, writing, and technical aspects of filmmaking.

The 69th National Film Awards was announced on 24 August 2023 and Presented on 17 October 2023. The Award was presented by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu and awarded by the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC). Here is the list of winners.
