JEE Advanced Examination: Eligibility, Exam Pattern, Syllabus

JEE Advanced is the final exam of the JEE entrance examination. To appear for JEE Advanced, one needs to clear the JEE Main examination first.

Candidates who secure a higher rank in JEE Main will be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced is the key to getting an entry for B.E. or B.Tech. programs in IITs and NITs. It is a computer-based test held in two sessions every year.

What is JEE  Advanced?

JEE Advanced is the only entrance exam that helps to admissions in undergraduate courses leading to a bachelor’s degree, Integrated master’s degree, or Bachelor-Master Dual Degree in Engineering, Science, or Architecture. It is a national-level exam and is the second level that the candidates need to qualify for the first JEE Main. 

Every year, more than 2.5 lakh candidates are allowed to sit for this entrance test.  The exam is conducted by any one of the seven IITs (IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Bombay, and IIT Roorkee) under the supervision of the Joint Admission Board (JAB).

JEE Advanced: Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates who are born on or after October 1, 1999, are eligible for the application. SC, ST, and PwD candidates get 5 years of age relaxation.
  • A candidate can appear for the JEE Advanced exam a maximum of two times in two consecutive years
  • Candidates who passed Class 12 in 2023 or 2024 are eligible for JEE Advanced 2024.

JEE Advanced: How to Fill Up the Application Form

  • Visit the official website of JEE Advanced 
  • Fill out all the details in the application form
  • Choose the exam centres. Students may choose up to eight cities for the exam on the form.
  •  Upload scanned passport-size photograph as well as signature.
  • Make a payment of the application fee
  • Before submitting, check the application form once again and take a printout for future reference

JEE Advanced: Exam Pattern

  • The exam will be conducted in an online mode (computer-based test) only.
  • There will be two papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2. The duration of each paper will be 3 hours, and all the candidates must take both exams. 
  • The exam will be in Hindi and English languages. Candidates can opt for either of the two.

Scanned documents to be uploaded in the online application form are mentioned below- 

  1. Class X certificate if the date of birth is mentioned in it or the birth certificate.
  2. Class XII (or equivalent examination) certificate
  3. Class XII (or equivalent examination) certificate
  4. If the candidate’s name is not the same as in the Class X certificate, a gazette notification showing the change of name. 
  5. Caste certificates as needed.

For Indian Candidates

  • Female- Rs. 1450/-
  • SC/ ST/ PwD- Rs. 1450/-
  • All other candidates – Rs. 2900/-

For Foreign Nationals

  • Candidates from SAARC countries have to pay USD 90, and the Non- SAARC candidates have to pay USD 180.

JEE Advanced 2024: Preparation Tips

  • Create a proper study schedule. It is a mandatory part that will help you to study strategically, and you can also cover the whole syllabus. You will also get time for taking revision.
  • Practicing mock tests is an essential part of preparing for the JEE Advanced. These tests will give you an idea of your current level of preparation and will help you identify the areas you need to improve.
  • Eat healthy food and get sufficient sleep. It is necessary to remain fit during the exam.
