CBSE changes exam format for Classes 11, 12 from 2024-25, focus on concept application questions

CBSE has changes exam format for Classes 11, 12 from this academic year, focusing on concept application questions rather than long-form answers.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced changes in the examination format for Class 11, 12 from this academic year 2024-25. The new changes align with the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020.

CBSE School Exam Changes

The new format will focus on concept application questions instead of long-form questions.

The percentage of competency-focused questions, like MCQs, case-based questions, source-based integrated questions, and others, has been increased from 40 to 50 percent. While the percentage of constructed response questions has been reduced from 40 to 30 percent.

Joseph Emanuel, Director (Academics) at CBSE, said, “The board, in accordance with National Education Policy, 2020, has taken multiple steps towards implementation of Competency-Based Education in schools, ranging from aligning assessment to competencies, development of exemplar resources for teachers and students as well as continuous capacity building of the teachers etc.”

The board has taken the move to shift students’ approach to studies to a more holistic way. It helps to build an education ecosystem and focus on creativity, critical thinking and system based learning.

The changes will prepare students for 21st-century challenges and move away from rote memorization.

The board has taken this move which will align with the National Education Policy (NEP) – 2020.

Emanuel also added, “Consequently, in the forthcoming session, the percentage of Competency Based Questions that assess the application of concepts in real-life situations included in the question papers of the board has been altered.”.

Till now, there has been no announcement of changes in exam format for Classes 9 and 10.
