The National Film Development Corporation is the body responsible for the presentation of the National Film Awards. Its awards are primarily divided into two categories: Featured Film Awards and Non-Featured Film Awards. Further, it is categorised into three sections: Feature Films, Non-Feature Films and Best Writing on Cinema.

The best personalities are awarded with medallions, cash, and a certificate of merit.

The National Film Awards recognise not only mainstream commercial films but also encourage independent and art-house cinema. The aim of the awards is to honour excellence in various categories, including acting, directing, writing, and technical aspects of filmmaking.
